A whole new world under the sea

Fact is, I’m a mountain person. But I’ve always been fascinated with the underwater world… an ecosystem on its own, with sea creatures big and small (turtles are my favorite), and colorful reefs. Unfortunately I could only go as far as the surface to snorkel (in a life vest, of course). Escape to Eastern Visayas: Sambawan Island

The Samar and Leyte regions aren’t really on my priority list of places to visit in the Philippines. When a friend was relocated to Tacloban for work, we decided to do some exploring last February. I didn’t have any expectations and it turned out to be quite an experience!

Since we only had 4 days and attractions were quite far from each other, we decided to do a relaxed trip and just cover 2 places: Sambawan Island in Biliran and Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte.

The Cordilleras’ Rice Terraces

The rice terraces up north have always been part of my bucket list. And they have been quite elusive to me. Might sound crazy that I flew all the way from Cebu for a 13-hour land trip – and fly back right after – but after two failed attempts in the past year, I was just more determined to go.

The itinerary was jampacked – in 2 days, we covered the Batad, Maligcong and Banaue rice terraces, plus Tappia falls and a sunrise hike up Mt. Kupapey.

Bohol’s best bets

Living in Cebu, the island of Bohol is just 2 hours away by ferry. I’ve always wanted to visit Bohol, so I didn’t pass up the chance.

It started pretty memorable – I had the scariest, wildest ferry ride of my life! The ferry was bobbing up and down the entire time, with waves crashing on the glass windows. A typhoon passed by days before and unfortunately the seas were still rough. It was the longest 2 hours. Ever. Continue reading
